Energetically meditative music
Flying Lotus is one of my favorite musicians. Great-Nephew of Alice Coltrane, he fuses electronic, hip hop, and jazz music into avant-garde beats. His music is both energetic and meditative, which is something I tried to capture with these designs.
I've always been attracted to his choice of samples and odd sounds. So for this project, I tried to illustrate what his music sounds like without illustrating him or the instruments he samples.
The different shapes in this poster were direct visual translations of sounds I heard from his music. In an interview, he mentioned that he sees his albums as music to zone out and meditate to, while his live performances are party-like and extroverted. I tried to create a visual that felt like you were looking through a telescope and a microscope at the same time.
I ripped and cut my way through graph paper and bank security envelopes to assemble this poster. Its based on his nature of samples. Although some of his sounds are electronic, he humanizes them and gives them character by how he handles these noises.
